Pain Management - Innovative approaches to pain relief - 2PM - 4:30PM - Sunday 8th October 2023

“Perhaps some day I’ll crawl back home, beaten, defeated. But not as long as I can make stories out of my heartbreak, beauty out of sorry.”

— Sylvia Plath

You might not realise it, but you're an inkwell. All those emotions, feelings, memories, insights ... they' really are better out than in. Ask yourself ... why do we love songs about heartbreak and pain more than their cheerful alternative? Because the artists in pain pour their hearts out. They turn their feelings into something life affirming and beautiful. It's the same with creative writing. Those who know pain and suffering, be it physical, emotional or mental, have amassed so much experience and insight that they have the material for a dozen bestsellers. Well, now's your chance. Whether it be through stories, poetry, memoir or simple journal keeping, the act of filling a blank page with words is at the least enjoyable, and at its best, truly healing. Bestselling novelist and Goldster Creative Writing tutor David Mark will guide you through the process of acknowledging, and connecting with the moments in your life that have at times felt unbearable. Through group work and specially-designed writing prompts, he will help you draw upon your pain and forbearance as inspiration, and create something remarkable, and unique, along the way.  You'll feel the tingle of creativity, the pride of putting your ideas on paper and the satisfaction of having made something as authentic and individual as you.  And hopefully, you'll lighten the load along the way.

Joanna Cooke

Joanna Cooke, a versatile Irish artist, believes that art is a transformative journey that enhances emotional and physical well-being. Art can bring delight, distraction, relaxation, and self-understanding.

Sadly, self-doubt often prevents people from engaging in art. A skilled art tutor can foster an encouraging environment that nurtures artistic expression.

Engaging in creativity yields three key benefits:

Distraction: Art can temporarily divert us from life's troubles, helping us to regain perspective and balance.

Relaxation: The creative process can induce a meditative state, calming mental noise, improving neural communication, reducing stress, and promoting physical healing.

Self-Understanding: Delving into creativity can yield profound self-insight. Authentic self-expression can emerge through style and imagery on paper.

Harry Langham

Harry Langham, Goldster's brilliant poet-in-residence, boasts a first-class honours degree in English Language and Literature from Oxford University.

According to Harry, "Poetry serves as a conduit for self-expression and awareness, offering therapeutic value."

During moments of heightened emotion in our lives, we often turn to poetry (much like song lyrics) to convey our overwhelming feelings with eloquence and artistry.

This is precisely why poetry excels at guiding us through challenging periods.

Harry further explains, "There's a unique aspect to poetry—it's both a craft and a means of expressing emotions. This duality provides enough distance for you to examine your feelings objectively, as if they were not the tumultuous emotions swirling in your mind.

It allows for a more analytical perspective."
