Over the last three decades, Ethan Chorin has had an extraordinary view of developments in the Middle East and North Africa as an American diplomat, oil and ports executive and advisor to senior government officials. Much of his has been on the oil-rich North African country of Libya, where he was posted as one of a small number of Americans tasked with setting a diplomatic presence after rapprochement with Libyan dictator Col. Muammar Gaddafi in the early 2000s. He returned to Libya in 2011, as the uprising against Gaddafi was underway and became a witness to the 2012 attack on the US mission in Benghazi, which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
From his Libyan experience Ethan has written two compelling books -- Exit the Colonel: The Hidden History of the Libyan Revolution in 2012 and this year, Benghazi!: A New History of the Fiasco that Pushed America and its World to the Brink. He has become a familiar radio voice and television face face commenting on the Middle East and North Africa.
In conversation with Humphrey Hawksley, Goldster Inside Story will go deep into the impact on all our lives, how disastrous decision were made in far off capitals about the future of Libya and how, as the country collapsed into anarchy, the country became the transport hub for refugees crossing the Mediterranean for safety in Europe.
Join Humphrey with Ethan Chorin for Goldster Inside Story at 12.00 British time Thursday December 1st 2022.
